Eight members of The California Senate Transportation Committee have voted unanimously to approve Senate Bill 1298, which would make it legal for licensed vehicle operators to take to the roads in an autonomous vehicle.  The bill will now make its way to the Senate Rules Committee.

SB 1298 outlines the process that must be undertaken before the vehicles can be put to use.  It calls on the development of performance and safety standards that the self driving cars will be required to meet.  It also tasks the California Highway Patrol and the DMV with coming up with a set of rules that the vehicles would be required to follow.
