The English language has, over the last century, become the most widely used language in the world. With approximately 380 million people speaking English as their native tongue and a similar number of people speaking it as a second language, it has progressed into the language of business, science and the arts globally. As a result of this, there is huge demand for teachers and therefore TEFL courses worldwide. There are a variety of options when considering which course to take. It is possible to get certificate, diploma or degree qualifications, while studying full-time, on weekends, or online at your own pace.

Whatever the format of the course, all TEFL courses are structured in a similar way. They focus on doing activities rather than a lot of theoretical learning and explanations. This is designed to get the students thinking and discussing ideas with each other, as this is usually the way that teaching English as a foreign language is most successful. The courses will include an introduction to grammar, and provide the future teachers with the skills they will need to introduce others to the intricacies of how to string words together correctly. Pronunciation will be majored on, especially as English contains so many words that sound the same and are spelt differently.

In TEFL courses, students are also encouraged to encounter different cultures and languages and will have the chance to learn another language for a few sessions. This helps them to understand what it is like to be learning another language, while giving them some tips on how to use mimes and gestures to communicate effectively. Appreciating and relating to other cultures is a very important part of teaching English in a foreign country.

Most importantly, TEFL courses give the students valuable experience teaching classes. Firstly, students will be able to see examples of teaching and what lessons could look like. Then they will get the opportunity to take classes and gain valuable experience, the kind of lessons only experience can bring. This should include a lot of involvement from the class, constructive feedback and evaluation times, and quite a lot of fun too. Completing a TELF qualification is a great way to engage in the world around you, exploring different cultures, relating to different people and teaching in a fun and interactive way.
