Cash in Any Language
March 1, 2010 on 5:25 am | By admin | In News and SocietyWhen you are traveling abroad to Europe or the United Kingdom you’ll need to convert your dollars to pounds or the equivalent in the country you are visiting. There are a variety of foreign exchange methods to convert your cash. Some companies have commission fees associated with their services. Not all companies charge these fees, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they are a better price. Some companies have competitive rates that offset the fees they may be charging. There are also flat fees that are feasible if you are converting a large sum of money. But minimum charges can be prohibitive for smaller amounts of cash. Three pounds or higher could be added on as a handling fee, so beware of these additional charges.
Your money can be converted a number of ways, either cash, traveler’s cheques, credit cards or prepaid cards, sometimes called a cash passport. There are pros and cons to any of these choices. Any of these conversions can have the fees described above, so keep your eye out for those charges when doing a foreign exchange.
The least secure is converting your money in cash, it can be lost or stolen and there isn’t any protection if this happens. Carrying cash can be convenient, but is it safe or wise?
Traveler’s cheques are protected and can be replaced if lost or stolen. You will need to keep a record of the cheque numbers and the sequence, or better yet, make a copy of the cheques and leave them in another place for safe keeping. You’ll need proof to get them replaced or at the very least the cheque numbers that were issued.
Credit cards are another option, but realize that interest rates could apply on this method of foreign exchange. Look for cards that offer zero interest for 12 months and pay off the balance before then. There is also a prepaid card or passport cash that provides additional security by requiring a PIN number and a signature when using. There may be top up fees when loading additional funds on these cards and the methods of top ups may vary. On either of these cards an ATM fee may be applied.
Remember the foreign exchange rates may vary from day to day. You might consider exchanging your cash earlier when the rates are favorable. The rates could go either way and it may be beneficial to exchange it at two or more different times.
